LATERAL “L”-REST

ARCH 497 / MAY 2016

This Device was originally designed to allow someone to comfortably lay on their side on the floor without pinching their elbow and shoulder, causing their arm to lose circulation and fall asleep.

The user’s elbow and forearm are meant to still rest on the ground, while the device cradles the upper torso and shoulder under the armpit, distributing the weight across multiple points instead of stressing the shoulder and elbow. This device also allows the user to use both hands to read, or use a laptop while not compromising their laying position.

It was created using CNC'd birch plywood, and woven polyester rope.

This project was featured in the annual SOFA exhibition in Chicago on November 3rd-6th, 2016
